From the Heart Rough Draft

The word "anak" is a word meaning son in Filipino, that my grandma calls me. But to her it didn't just mean son it meant generous son, and a son that will be successful in life. Mostly all filipino's call there son or grandson anak because it's respect. The reason why my parents don't call me that is because back in my grandma's time her dad used to always say anak to her brothers. To me when ever I hear anak I would go to her because she would always make me good filipino food. She would ask me to clean up her carpet or call me to watch my baby cousin.

As time passed, we planned a family trip to Las Vegas.  I would always want to sit next to my grandma because  she would always make me laugh with funny jokes. When we got to Vegas all my grandma wanted to do was gamble. I asked her if I could gamble too but she would always laugh at me and say when youreach 21 you can with me. Not just me she would call me anak but to all my other cousins too. She respected all of us and we are very thankful that we have our grandma who takes care of us and loves us like how she loves the whole family.

Coming back from Vegas was bittersweet because it was the last time I would spend time with my family in Vegas. When we arrived to Honolulu my grandma used to buy me Starbucks at the airport to keep me awake, even tho my mom didn't like me to drink coffee. When we got home we all went to bed and I would kiss my grandma goodnight and she would  say good night anak.

I ask my dad to teach me some filipino so I can teach my kids in the future. I will definitely  use the word anak to my son. When  my grandma used to watch me when I was young she used to always cook for me and my little cousin she used to cook fish, and other filipino food. If I would make trouble or do something bad she would give me "bak bak" which is spanking in Filipino.

As I got older and as time went by my grandma found a job as a janitor but got paid twice as much because she was friends with the owner.  I would always go with my dad to drop my grandma off to work early in the morning.  She used to always say goodbye anak to my dad and to me because that's how respectful she is. Anak to me is not just meaning son, but meaning nice, respectful, and generous. Thank you Grandma for always taking care of me. With out you I wouldn't have the courage to say anak or learn filipino when I get older.

  1. I like your examples of your grandma calling you "Anak".
There are a few grammatical and spelling errors so you should go back and reread your essay. You have a good amount of personal thoughts but it would be a stronger essay if there was more.
Overall, I thought it was a very good and interesting essay.

  2. Your purpose is really nice and sincere, and you're content as well. This is talking mostly about your Grandma, and how she calls you "anak." Your form is very effective and really heartwarming, and you have a lot of personal thoughts. The only thing I have a problem with is how you write your sentences. Some of your sentences are run on sentences, and you should put periods in the middle of some of them. Overall, I really like your essay! :)

  3. AS(1+) YOU NEED TO ORGANIZE AND COMPLETE YOUR THOUGHTS. THERE ARE SO MANY DIFFERENT STORIES AND IDEAS GOING ON THAT IT GETS CONFUSING. "The reason why my parents don't call me that is because back in my grandma's time her dad used to always say anak to her brothers. To me when ever I hear anak I would go to her because she would always make me good filipino food. She would ask me to clean up her carpet or call me to watch my baby cousin" YOU HAVE FOUR DIFFERENT IDEAS IN THIS SECTION AND NONE OF IT IS CLEARLY EXPLAINED. TAKE YOUR TIME READ OVER YOUR WORK AND MAKE SURE YOUR PARAGRAPHS INTRODUCE AN IDEA AND COMPLETE IT.
YOU ESSAY IS ALSO LACKING PERSONAL/EMOTIONAL REFLECTION, IT IS JUST STORY AFTER STORY. IF THE STORY DOESN'T SUPPORT WHY THE WORD IS SPECIAL DON'T USE IT. YOU NEED TO ADD A LOT MORE PERSONAL REFLECTION, WHY YOU LIKE THE WORD SO MUCH, WHAT'S SO SPECIAL ABOUT IT COMPARED TO ALL THE OTHER WORDS YOU HEAR. WHY DO YOU LIKE IT SO MUCH THAT YOU ARE CALLED THAT, WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU WHEN YOU HEAR IT.
